Charities urged access to surplus vaccines for Poor Countries

A group of charities is urging Boris Johnson to provide a swift clarity about how many Covid vaccine doses will be donated to poorer countries. It has been released by the officials that UK does not currently have a surplus of vaccines, but as soon as they have, it will be shared to the poorer countries.

Already over 400 million vaccine doses have been delivered to UK and will donate most of its surplus vaccine supply to poorer countries which will be left unused. Countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, DR Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia are most likely to receive the first vaccines through COVAX soon.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster hopes that the UK will provide vaccine doses to the Republic of Ireland, to help stop the spread of infection in Northern Ireland. Adding on to that, she said that sharing excess supply with Ireland was “a runner” and she will “be making that point again” whenever she gets opportunities.

The plan is to share unused vaccines with other underdeveloped countries since these countries can’t afford the Covid vaccine. Over 29 million UK adults have received a first dose of a Covid vaccine so far.

The charities in a letter mentioned that the UK is one of the highest per capita buyers of vaccines in the world and is well on track to have over 100 million surplus doses. Therefore, the chances are that the UK will hoard limited supply whilst health workers and the most vulnerable to low and middle-income countries do not even have sufficient access.

UK has enough surplus vaccine doses to vaccinate the world’s frontline health workers, that too twice over, and that is why the group urges the UK Government to begin donating doses immediately through the COVAX initiative.

It is the time to think beyond our borders and the world will not be safe if any single country is still struggling with the virus. If they are left untreated, it will lead into mutation to an extent where the vaccines and treatments will no longer work.

Mr. Dowden this past Sunday gave his opinions to the Sky News that their priority is to ensure that they deliver vaccines in the United Kingdom. As he stated, they don’t have a surplus of vaccines at the moment but if at any point of time if they get to the point where they have a surplus of vaccines, they will surely decide on the allocation of that surplus vaccines.

The prime minister has also confirmed the UK will share most of the surplus coronavirus vaccines from our supply with the COVAX pool as No-one is safe until we are all safe.
